SRINAGAR: The Kashmir Advocates Association has approached the Supreme Court seeking establishment of a bar council for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

A Bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta on Friday sought the responses of the Central government and the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court to the plea. Currently, there is no bar council for J&K and lawyers take the membership of Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association.

Section 3 of the Advocates Act regarding establishment of about State Bar Councils.

This is the second such petition filed before the top court.

The Court is already seized of a plea filed in 2022 raising the very same issue.

That plea filed by Jammu-based advocate Supriya Pandita pointed out that currently there is no government-established body where lawyers from the region can get themselves enrolled and avail Bar Council benefits as in other States of the country.

The Court had issued notice in that petition in July 2022. (Bar & Bench)
