Srinagar: Member of Parliament from the Srinagar Lok Sabha seat and senior National Conference leader, Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, asserted that his fight for the return of Article 370 and other rights is rooted in belief and conviction, not ambition for power.
Responding to PDP youth leader Waheed-ur-Rehman Para, who criticized him for not proposing a resolution to condemn the abrogation of Article 370, Ruhullah took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his views. He emphasized that introducing such a resolution in a Parliament dominated by the BJP, which abrogated Article 370, would likely lead to rejection and further setbacks.
Ruhullah explained his introduction of a liquor bill, noting it was inspired by BJP’s declaration of Gujarat as a dry state, hoping to open a debate on the issue in Jammu and Kashmir. He acknowledged the challenges in pushing for the restoration of Article 370 and indicated that he has initiated discussions on this matter within Parliament.
He highlighted that he submitted a question regarding the revocation of the UAPA and AFSPA but faced obstacles in getting it listed for discussion. Ruhullah stated, “I have only had one working session of Parliament till now. There is a lot to come,” urging patience from his constituents.
Addressing criticism about not protesting outside Parliament, he reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for Jammu and Kashmir’s rights within legislative discussions, rather than through public demonstrations. Ruhullah noted that the restoration of Article 370 is a priority for his party and part of their election manifesto.
Earlier, Para questioned why Ruhullah did not propose a formal resolution on the abrogation of Article 370 or push for legislation against the misuse of UAPA, emphasizing the need for legislative action on contentious issues affecting the region.
Ruhullah welcomed scrutiny of his efforts, stating he has consistently stood by his commitments and is dedicated to advocating for the rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
