SRINAGAR: In a clear example of preferential treatment, the Kashmir Power Development Corporation Limited (KPDCL) has deleted two tweets, along with geo-tagged photos showing evidence of power theft, accusing prominent businessman Syed Mustafa Shah.
According to Srinagar-based news agency Kashmir Dot Com, Shah, the owner of the leading healthcare provider Medicare, was, as per KPDCL’s original tweets, involved in a power theft case. The now-deleted tweets included serious accusations and geo-tagged images depicting illegal hooking at Shah’s property.
“How do you explain this ‘hookingam’ business? A huge palatial house at Dr. Colony, Lal Bazar, #ESD Hawal, owned by Mr. Syed Mustafa Shah, ID: 23108, caught with illegal hook on bare conductor, Booked,” the first tweet stated.
“House of Mr. Syed Mustafa Shah, caught with bypassed meter and illegal hook on bare conductor by #ESD Hawal team, was running 09 ACs, apart from several other gadgets: Er Shahid Amin, SDO,” the second tweet added.

The removal of these tweets has sparked controversy, raising questions about KPDCL’s impartiality in enforcing power regulations.
Locals argue that the deletion of these tweets indicates a possible bias towards wealthy and influential individuals, suggesting that KPDCL may have been pressured to retract the allegations due to Shah’s prominent status.
In contrast, KPDCL has consistently used its social media platform to publicize power theft and unpaid dues by less affluent individuals, often resulting in public shaming and humiliation. This perceived double standard has led to concerns about the fairness and transparency of KPDCL’s practices.
Efforts to reach out to KPDCL’s Managing Director, Musarat Zia, for comment have been unsuccessful, with multiple calls and messages remaining unanswered. (KDC)
