Srinagar, Oct 26: At least 16,397 women and girls, including minors, have been reported missing in Jammu and Kashmir since 2019, with 4,271 still untraced, according to data obtained by The Tribune through a Right to Information (RTI) application filed with the J&K Home Department.

The figures show that authorities have traced 12,126 of the missing women and girls, while more than 26 per cent of the reported cases remain unresolved.

Of the total cases, 14,593 involved adult women reported missing between 2019 and June 2026. Of these, 11,338 were traced, while 3,255 remain untraced.

The data also records 1,804 minor girls reported missing between 2019 and August 2026. While 788 were traced, 1,016 remain missing.

The Home Department did not provide district-wise details of the cases, according to the report.

The number of adult women reported missing stood at 1,388 in 2019 and 1,398 in 2020. The figure rose to 1,854 in 2021 before dipping to 1,766 in 2022.

In 2023, the number increased to 2,242, while 2025 recorded the highest annual figure, with 2,595 adult women reported missing. Of these, 2,102 were traced and 493 remained untraced.

The second-highest figure was recorded in 2023, when 699 of the 2,242 women reported missing remained untraced, the data shows.

Among girls below 18 years of age, the number of reported missing cases rose from 150 in 2019 to 221 in 2021 and 249 in 2022. The figure increased further to 261 in 2023, fell to 226 in 2024 and reached 289 in 2025.

Of the 289 girls reported missing in 2025, 166 remained untraced.

In 2026, up to August, 286 girls were reported missing, of whom 158 remained untraced, according to the figures.

Overall, 1,016 of the 1,804 minor girls reported missing since 2019 remain untraced, meaning more than half of the cases involving minors are unresolved.

The figures highlight the scale of missing-person cases involving women and girls in the Union Territory, although the data provided does not specify the circumstances behind individual disappearances.

Separately, National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data for 2024 recorded 1,202 cases in Jammu and Kashmir related to kidnapping, abducting or inducing women to compel them to marry under Section 87 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
