Srinagar, July 18: The Jammu and Kashmir Government on Saturday extended the ongoing summer vacation for all government and recognised private schools across the Kashmir Division and winter zones of Jammu Division till July 22, citing the prevailing heatwave and adverse weather forecast.
School Education and Higher Education Minister Sakina Itoo announced the decision in a post on X, stating, “In view of the prevailing weather conditions, it has been decided to extend the summer vacation for all Government and recognized private schools in the Kashmir Division and the winter zones of Jammu Division up to 22nd July (Wednesday).”
Schools, which were earlier scheduled to reopen on July 20, will now remain closed until July 22, with classes set to resume on July 23, subject to any further orders issued by the government.
The decision has been taken as a precautionary measure in view of the continuing spell of extreme heat and weather advisories issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which has forecast heavy rainfall and the possibility of localized flash floods in parts of Jammu and Kashmir over the coming days.
Officials said the extension aims to ensure the safety and well-being of students, teachers and school staff amid the prevailing weather conditions.
The School Education Department has advised parents, students and school authorities to follow official advisories and await further instructions regarding the reopening of educational institutions. It said any further decision, depending on weather conditions, would be communicated through appropriate government orders.
