Srinagar, Sept 17, KDC: Former Hurriyat leader Prof Abdul Gani Bhat passed away on Wednesday evening at his residence in north Kashmir’s Sopore.

Born in 1935, Prof. Bhat co-founded the Muslim United Front (MUF) in 1986 and later became chairman of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), an amalgam of separatist groups formed in 1993. He also led the Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference (MCJK), which was subsequently banned by the Government of India, reported news agency Kashmir Dot Com.

Before entering politics, he taught Persian for 22 years and was a noted academician. His political journey was marked by arrest, activism, and leadership in Kashmir’s separatist movement. (

His death marks the end of a long and influential career in Kashmir’s political and academic spheres. (KDC)
