NEW DELHI, Sep 2, KDC: In a rare trap case, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) apprehended two private individuals for allegedly offering and paying a bribe of ₹22 lakh to a Superintendent of GST Intelligence.
The Superintendent, who was probing alleged tax evasion by several online companies, was approached with an offer to favor the firms in exchange for the bribe, CBI said in a statement according to news agency Kashmir Dot Com, adding that instead of yielding, the officer reported the matter to the CBI and agreed to assist in a “reverse trap” operation.
Acting on the complaint, CBI laid a meticulously planned trap and caught the accused red-handed as they were attempting to hand over the bribe. Following the arrests, searches were carried out at multiple locations linked to the accused, which officials said could reveal more evidence related to the bribery attempt and the suspected tax evasion racket.
Terming it a significant success, officials said the case underlined the role of upright officers in combating corruption. “The commitment of honest public servants to uphold integrity is central to the fight against corrupt practices,” the CBI noted in its release.
The arrested individuals are likely to face prosecution under anti-corruption laws, while investigations into the alleged tax evasion continue. (KDC)
