Srinagar, Mar 01: The Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered over 70 e-FIRs under the newly implemented Bhartiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), officials said.
A police official stated that citizens can now lodge complaints through various electronic means, including SMS, email, WhatsApp, Citizen Service Centers, and Web Portals (E-forms), in addition to traditional methods like verbal, telephonic, or written complaints.
“As of now, 52 complaints have been received via SMS and email across different police stations in the Union Territory, while 64 complaints were filed through Citizen Service Centers, and 10 complaints were received via Web Portals/E-forms. More than 70 such complaints have been converted into FIRs,” the official said.
Under Section 173 of BNSS, any electronic complaint received by the police must be recorded, but the complainant is required to sign it within three days, he added.
Regarding Zero FIRs, the official said that over 100 such FIRs have been registered across various police stations in J&K, out of which 83 FIRs were transferred to police stations outside the Union Territory.
The official also stressed that with increasing awareness about cybercrime, checks and balances have been implemented at various levels to prevent the misuse of e-FIR provisions by miscreants.
