SRINAGAR, Jan 2: The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the empanelment of 71 Indian Police Service (IPS) officers, including Amit Kumar, for holding Inspector General (IG) or IG-equivalent level positions at the Centre.

The officers belong to the 2006 batch (initial) as well as the 1997 to 2005 batches (initial leftover/deferred), as per an order from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

Amit Kumar, currently serving as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) at the National Investigation Agency (NIA), is among the empanelled officers. Kumar has previously served as DIG for central Kashmir, SSP Pulwama, SSP Srinagar, SSP SBK, DIG southern Kashmir, and DIG Armed Police.

The senior IPS officer is notable for surviving a life-threatening bullet injury during an encounter in Pinglan, where two militants were killed in February 2019. In recognition of his bravery, Amit Kumar was awarded the prestigious Shaurya Chakra in August 2020.
