SRINAGAR: National Conference (NC) leader Omar Abdullah is set to take oath as the new chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir on October 16. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha sent a letter to the CM-designate on Monday inviting him to take the oath.

Several leaders of the INDIA bloc, the opposition front consisting of NC and other parties, are likely to attend the historic oath event, with most of them expected to arrive today. Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav will most likely arrive in Jammu and Kashmir on the eve of the swearing-in ceremony, claimed those aware of the development. It added that Kanimozhi Karunanidhi from DMK, Supriya Sule from Sharad Pawar’s NCP and Shiromani Akali Dal’s Sukhbir Singh Badal will attend the event.

In what could be seen as a move to showcase INDIA bloc unity ahead of key assembly polls in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, the National Conference extended invite to West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, MK Stalin, Uddhav Thackeray, Sharad Pawar, Akhilesh Yadav, Lalu Prasad Yadav, Arvind Kejriwal and D Raja, claimed sources.

The NC-Congress alliance, which won a combined 48 seats out of the total 90 in the recent J&K elections, is set to form the new government. The NC secured 42 seats, while Congress won six.

Abdullah was unanimously elected as the leader of the NC legislature party, and this will be his second term as the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir.

J&K LG Invites CM-designate Omar Abdullah For Oath Jammu and Kashmir LG Manoj Sinha Sinha on Monday invited National Conference leader Omar Abdullah to take oath as the chief minister of the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir on October 16.

In a letter to Abdullah, Sinha said, “I have received a letter of 11th October 2024 from Dr Farooq Abdullah, President, Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, wherein it has been informed that you have been unanimously elected as Leader of the Legislature Party.”Reacting to the letter, Abdullah wrote on X, “Was pleased to receive the Principal Secretary to LG Manoj Sinha ji. He handed over a letter from the @OfficeOfLGJandK inviting me to form the next government in J&K.”
