Srinagar, June 23, KDC: The Jammu and Kashmir Police is looking to use a powerful law against people suspected of helping Pakistani militants.
Sources in the Police administration told Srinagar-based news gathering agency Kashmir Dot Com that the law, called the Enemy Agents Ordinance Act, is rarely used but very strict.
“DGP R.R. Swain is leading this effort, which aims to stop anyone from assisting militants in any way,” they said.
This decision comes after a worrying increase in militant attacks across the Pir-Panchal area and parts of Jammu in recent months. These attacks have caused many deaths.
Since June 9, the day the new government at the Centre took oath, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed four militant attacks, including the targeting of a bus carrying pilgrims in Reasi. All these attacks have happened in Jammu, which highlights the shift in focus of militancy from Kashmir.
Police have already arrested several people suspected of helping these militant groups.
According to police, “around 60 to 70 terrorists are active on launch pads across the Line of Control (LoC).”
After the abrogation of Article 370, the strategy of militant groups based in Pakistan shifted focus from the Kashmir Valley, where security forces maintain a firm grip. For the past 2–3 years, Jammu has seen a surge in violence, particularly in 2023 with 43 militant attacks and 20 so far in 2024.
It remains to be seen when the Enemy Agents Ordinance Act will be officially invoked in Jammu and Kashmir. (KDC)
