Srinagar, June 10, KDC: On the solemn occasion of the 43rd death anniversary of Late Mirza Mohammad Afzal Beg, fondly remembered as Fakhr-e-Kashmir (Pride of Kashmir), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), under the leadership of President and former Chief Minister Ms. Mehbooba Mufti, extends its heartfelt tributes to one of Jammu and Kashmir’s most revered leaders.

Mirza Afzal Beg was a towering figure whose contributions as a statesman, reformer, and champion of social justice continue to resonate across generations. As the first Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir (1975–1977) and a key architect of historic land reforms, his legacy remains etched in the annals of our region’s history. His visionary leadership as Revenue Minister led to the groundbreaking Big Landed Estates Abolition Act of 1950, which redistributed land to the tillers, empowering countless marginalized farmers and reshaping the socio-economic fabric of Jammu and Kashmir.

Ms. Mehbooba Mufti, reflecting on his enduring impact, said “Mirza Afzal Beg Sahib was not merely a politician but a beacon of hope and dignity for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. His foresight, integrity, and unwavering commitment to justice transformed lives and laid the foundation for a more equitable society. His monumental role in land reforms gave voice and agency to the voiceless, ensuring that the fruits of freedom reached the common man. On this day, we honor his memory by recommitting ourselves to the values of compassion, inclusivity, and public service that he exemplified.”

The PDP leadership paid glowing tributes to Mirza Afzal Beg alongside former minister and Chief Spokesperson Dr. Mehboob Beg, son of the late leader, who continues to carry forward his father’s legacy of service and advocacy.

Ms. Mufti further remarked “Mirza Afzal Beg Sahib’s life reminds us that true leadership is about uplifting the downtrodden and building bridges of understanding. His contributions to Jammu and Kashmir’s public life are a guiding light for us as we strive to restore dignity, justice, and hope to our people in these challenging times. His memory inspires us to work tirelessly for a future where every voice is heard, and every citizen is empowered.”

The Peoples Democratic Party calls upon the people of Jammu and Kashmir to reflect on Mirza Afzal Beg’s ideals and contributions, which remain as relevant today as ever. Let us unite in honoring his vision by fostering peace, progress, and unity in Jammu and Kashmir.
