New Delhi, June 1, KDC: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer of the 2007 batch, presently serving as Additional Director General at the Directorate of Taxpayer Services, New Delhi, along with a private individual, for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹25 lakh.

According to a statement issued by the CBI, the arrests were made in connection with a case registered on May 31, 2025. The senior IRS officer had allegedly demanded an illegal gratification of ₹45 lakh from a complainant in exchange for extending favourable treatment from the Revenue and Income Tax Department. The demand was reportedly coupled with threats of legal action, imposition of heavy penalties, and harassment if the bribe was not paid.

The central agency laid a trap and apprehended the private individual red-handed while he was accepting ₹25 lakh — part payment of the total bribe — on behalf of the public servant at the officer’s residence in Mohali, Punjab. The IRS officer was subsequently taken into custody from his residence in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi, reported news agency Kashmir Dot Com.

Both accused are expected to be produced before a competent court soon. Meanwhile, the CBI is conducting searches at multiple locations across Delhi, Punjab, and Mumbai in connection with the case, CBI said, adding that the investigation is ongoing. (KDC)
