Srinagar, Feb 27, KDC: Incessant rain in the plains and moderate snowfall in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday ended the prolonged dry spell, significantly improving water discharge in rivers, streams, and springs across the UT.

Bringing much-needed relief to thousands of residents, almost all water bodies have regained normal flow. The historic Achabal spring in Anantnag district, which had completely dried up, has naturally been restored, bringing cheer to the locals who depend on it for drinking water and irrigation.

Higher reaches, including Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Zojila Pass, Gurez, Sinthan Top, Peer Ki Gali, and Razdan Pass, received moderate snowfall. Reports indicate that Gulmarg has accumulated two to three feet of fresh snow, raising hopes for the commencement of the Khelo India 2025 Winter Games in Gulmarg. The event had been postponed due to the lack of snowfall earlier this winter.

Previously, insufficient snowfall had failed to replenish perennial water reservoirs in the higher reaches, which sustain rivers, lakes, and springs during summer. The prolonged dry spell had caused several springs to dry up, raising concerns about a potential drought. However, the recent rainfall and snowfall have alleviated these fears.

Minimum temperatures recorded on Thursday were: Srinagar at 5.1°C, Gulmarg at -1.8°C, and Pahalgam at -1°C. In Jammu division, Jammu city recorded 17.2°C, Katra 14.8°C, Batote 6.5°C, Banihal 6°C, and Bhaderwah 5.8°C.

The Meteorological Department (MeT) has forecast more rain and snow in the Union Territory over the next 24 hours, after which weather conditions are expected to improve. (KDC)
