Srinagar, Febr 26, KDC: In a significant breakthrough, Srinagar Police have busted a gang of highway robbers who were impersonating police commandos to loot trucks during nighttime.
The gang, according to a police spokesperson was involved in multiple incidents of extortion, using fake weapons and commando uniforms to intimidate truck drivers.
The case came to light after a complaint was filed by Chanchal Singh, a resident of Haryana, who reported that a group of unidentified men stopped his vehicle at Maloora, Shalteng, and robbed him at gunpoint. Acting on the complaint, an FIR was registered at Police Station Shalteng, and an intensive investigation was launched, police said.
Following a well-coordinated search operation, police successfully apprehended four accused from different areas of the city. The arrested individuals have been identified as Sahil Ahmad Sheikh and Aqib Ahmad Sheikh, both sons of Mehraj-u-Din Sheikh from Narkarah Budgam, Arbaz Ahmad Wani, son of Hilal Ahmad Wani from SD Colony Batmaloo, and Faisal Ahmad Shah, son of Azad Ahmad Shah from Nowhatta. The suspects are history-sheeters with multiple cases registered against them.
During the raids, police recovered two dummy guns, black commando uniforms, a Swift vehicle, nine mobile phones, ATM cards, and a significant amount of cash. Investigations revealed that the gang specifically targeted trucks with registration numbers from outside Jammu and Kashmir, choosing isolated highway stretches under the cover of darkness to execute their crimes.
Police have urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, reaffirming their commitment to maintaining law and order. (KDC)
