Srinagar: Peoples Conference president Sajad Gani Lone on Friday called for a strong response from the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly regarding the constitutional changes imposed on August 5, 2019, which removed J&K’s special status..
Speaking during the Motion of Thanks on the Lieutenant Governor’s address, Lone said that the Assembly’s stance should reflect the “wrongs” done to the people of J&K.
“This is the most disempowered Assembly, yet it is the first gathering since August 5, 2019. Our response to those changes should be as significant as the impact on Kashmiris,” Lone said.
Lone criticized the recent resolution by the government on the August 5 changes, calling it “ambiguous” and “meek.” He urged the Assembly to reconsider the resolution, adding, “There are ambiguities in it, and I urge you to make it stronger.”
He further expressed concerns about the police verification process in J&K, describing it as excessively stringent and burdensome for youth and their families. “Across the country, verification applies to individuals, but here, entire families and even extended families are scrutinized,” he said, calling for J&K’s verification process to align with standard practices elsewhere in India.
