SRINAGAR: BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya briefly acknowledged the National Conference’s (NC) recent resolution in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly as a “significant shift,” noting its call for open dialogue on the region’s special status rather than demanding full restoration of Article 370.
In his now-deleted post on X, Malviya according to Srinagar based news gathering agency Kashmir Dot Com remarked that this approach reflects “the new reality post-August 5, 2019” when Jammu and Kashmir’s special status was revoked, and described the resolution as a potential pathway to “meaningful engagement with the people of J&K.”
Malviya’s post also criticized the Congress for allegedly opposing the resolution despite holding only six seats in the Assembly.
BJP IT Head’s post, however, sparked debate, as it came shortly after BJP leaders protested in the Assembly, labeling the resolution unconstitutional and insisting it undermined the abrogation of J&K’s special status, a move upheld by Parliament and the Supreme Court.
BJP’s protests continued, with Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma stating the party would not permit Assembly proceedings until the resolution was withdrawn.
Interestingly, this resolution—moved by Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary—has generated mixed reactions within the Assembly and among political observers.
Critics argue that its language, while expressing concern over the erosion of J&K’s unique identity, culture, and rights, is vague and avoids explicitly condemning the 2019 abrogation of Article 370 or mentioning the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act, 2019. (KDC)
