SRINAGAR: The National Conference (NC) and CPI(M) have announced their decision not to participate in the upcoming Foundation Day celebration of the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu & Kashmir, set for October 31 at SKICC Srinagar, with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha as the chief guest.
NC’s chief spokesperson, Tanvir Sadiq, condemned the event, labeling it “unfair” and a celebration of the “unconstitutional” revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status on August 5, 2019. Sadiq reiterated NC’s demand for the early restoration of statehood to Jammu & Kashmir, emphasizing that the traditional *Darbar Move*, which symbolized unity between Jammu and Kashmir, was abolished in this process.
“Our manifesto is committed to restoring J&K’s unique legacy,” Sadiq stated. “We assure the people that our mandate will address these issues gradually over our five-year term.”
CPI(M) leader and MLA Kulgam, Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, shared similar sentiments, asserting that “assaulting constitutional rights of the citizens shouldn’t be celebrated.” Tarigami criticized the manner in which the transition to UT status was enforced, highlighting the communications blackout in Kashmir and stringent restrictions in Jammu at the time. He maintained that this approach exemplified New Delhi’s disregard for local sentiments and rights.
The divisional administration’s October 31 event intends to commemorate J&K’s transition to Union Territory status, though key regional parties continue to express strong opposition to the constitutional changes.
