SRINAGAR: Political leaders across Jammu and Kashmir have strongly condemned the suspected militant attack on non-local laborers in the Gagangir area of Ganderbal district, which claimed two lives and left several others injured. The attack, which took place on Sunday, has drawn widespread outrage from leaders, who termed it a “cowardly” and “senseless” act of violence.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed his sorrow and condemnation of the attack, stating, “Very sad news of a dastardly and cowardly attack on non-local laborers at Gagangir in Sonamarg. These people were working on a key infrastructure project in the area. Two have been killed, and 2-3 more have been injured in this militant attack. I strongly condemn this attack on unarmed innocent people and send my condolences to their loved ones,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Former Chief Minister and PDP President Mehbooba Mufti also took to X, unequivocally denouncing the attack. “Unequivocally condemn this senseless act of violence against two laborers in Ganderbal. Deepest condolences to their families,” Mufti wrote.

Several other political figures voiced their concerns and expressed sympathy for the victims’ families. J&K Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) President Tariq Hameed Karra condemned the attack, emphasizing the need for immediate measures to prevent such brutal incidents. He stated that these attacks would vitiate the region’s atmosphere and urged the government to take action.

CPI(M) leader and MLA Kulgam Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami called the incident a deliberate attempt to disturb peace. “These despicable attacks appear to be deliberate attempts to disturb peace. Culprits must be brought to book and punished. Sending my heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families,” Tarigami said on X.

J&K Peoples’ Conference (JKPC) chairman Sajad Gani Lone also condemned the attack, calling it an “insane act of madness.” He expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and urged for justice to be served.

The attack comes just 48 hours after a non-local laborer was killed in Shopian. Security forces have launched an extensive search operation to trace the perpetrators behind the attacks. (KDC)
