SRINAGAR: In the upcoming elections for the Sonawari Assembly Segment in Bandipora district, Independent candidate Yasir Reshi is distinguished by his clean criminal record, while the other two main contenders, Hilal Lone and Imtiyaz Parray, are facing criminal charges.
According to the affidavits submitted by the candidates, Yasir Reshi is the only contender without any criminal charges.
Reshi is running as an Independent candidate, associated with Engineer Rashid’s Awami Ittehad Party (AIP), which is not officially recognized by the Election Commission of India. His clean record sets him apart in a race that includes two candidates with significant legal issues.
National Conference’s Hilal Akbar Lone, who is the son of senior leader Akbar Lone, faces multiple criminal charges. Lone’s affidavit reveals that he has an FIR registered against him at Police Station Hajin.
The FIR, numbered 02/2021, includes serious allegations under sections 125 of the Public Safety Act (PR Act), 13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (ULA(P) Act), and sections 153-A, 188, and 505 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). These sections pertain to promoting enmity between different groups, disobedience to orders, and making statements likely to cause public mischief.
On the other hand, Imtiyaz Parray of the Apni Party, led by Altaf Bukhari, is facing legal troubles related to corruption and forgery. Parray’s affidavit indicates that he has two FIRs registered against him.
The first is FIR no 13/2013, lodged with the Anti-Corruption Bureau Kashmir under sections 5(1) read with 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act and 120-B of the RPC, which deals with corruption-related offenses.
The second FIR, numbered 23/2015, was filed at the Police Station Crime Branch Srinagar and involves charges under sections 420 (cheating) and 468 (forgery) of the IPC. Parray is currently undergoing court trials for these charges.
Reshi’s past electoral performance includes a narrow defeat in the 2014 assembly elections, where he lost to Akbar Lone by a margin of approximately 420 votes. (KDC)
