SRINAGAR: A Border Security Force (BSF) personnel was injured when Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked firing on Indian posts, violating the ceasefire agreement along the border iin Akhnoor area on Wednesday, officials said.
The BSF troops retaliated, though any casualties on the Pakistani side were not immediately known. Officials stated that troops remain on high alert and are maintaining a strict vigil along the International Border (IB) and Line of Control (LoC).
Ceasefire violations between the two countries have been rare since India and Pakistan renewed the ceasefire agreement on February 25, 2021. However, last year, a BSF jawan was killed in Pakistan Rangers’ firing in the Ramgarh sector, marking the first Indian casualty in over three years.
This recent ceasefire violation occurs just days ahead of the first phase of the three-phase assembly elections, set to begin on September 18. The second phase is scheduled for September 25, with the final phase on October 1.
