SRINAGAR: The security agencies have been put on high alert in Jammu and Kashmir after the intelligence inputs issued a significant threat in the region ahead of the Assembly polls, sources said.
Assembly elections will be held in Jammu and Kashmir for the first time since the scrapping of Article 370, with the Union Territory going to polls in three phases from September 18. The other two phases will be on September 25 and October 1.
Ahead of the polls, the focus of the security measures is particularly strong in the regions of Rajouri, Poonch, Kathua, and Doda, which are considered high-risk areas. The Jammu region has seen increased terror activity this year, inflicting major losses on the security forces.
According to sources, the terror activities are believed to be part of a broader strategy by terrorist groups to create instability ahead of the Assembly polls in the Union Territory.
Till August 2024, the security forces have eliminated 33 terrorists in the Union Territory, showing their commitment to maintaining peace and security.
Out of these, six terrorists were neutralised in areas located south of the Pir Panjal Range, which highlights the ongoing efforts to combat terrorism in the region. The Indian Army has also increased its presence in Jammu, deploying forces equivalent to a brigade in strength.
This strategic deployment is aimed at ensuring the safety and stability of the region as the election comes close, with the security forces remaining vigilant against any potential threats. (India Today)
