Kupwara, July 06, KDC: Dr. Abdul Qayoom Mir, a distinguished academician from Thandi Pora, Kupwara, passed away at the age of 54 on Saturday . Dr. Qayoom, a professor at Umer Mukhtar University in Libya for the past 15 years, was widely respected and had numerous publications in national and international journals.
According to Srinagar based news agency Kashmir Dot Com, Prior to his tenure in Libya, Dr. Qayoom had a notable career in India. He served in the Animal Husbandry Department for five years, after topping the JKPSC selection list. He then worked as an assistant professor at SKUAST Jammu for two years, followed by another two years at SKUAST Kashmir. His significant contributions to science and education earned him the Young Scientist Award in India.
Dr. Qayoom is survived by his wife, a daughter, and a son.
He was the elder nephew of Glulam Hassan, the current Joint Commissioner Planning of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC).
According to his family, he was laid to rest in his ancestral village, Thandi Pora (Kralpora), Kupwara.
The academic community, especially in Kashmir and Kupwara, has expressed deep condolences, acknowledging the profound loss to academics in the region. (KDC)
